Supernova
Community Standards

Overview

First of all, it's important to remember that you are the 'Community'.

These guidelines are designed for you to follow to ensure that you and all others on Supernova enjoy a great social experience.

Our top priority is the safety of all people who use the Supernova network; the members of our community or our ‘Novas’. That’s all who post, scroll and comment. All who Sponsor. Our Charity partners. Our team. Our stakeholders and supporters. Our detractors. Anyone and everyone who has reason to look at our pages and the content on our network. Without exception, we want you to have a safe, enjoyable experience you know you can trust.

And as we said at the start; this is your Community.

Social Media only exists because people make it exist.

Unlike any other form of entertainment, it relies almost entirely 'user generated' content.

So the very least we the 'platform' can commit to is to do our utmost to keep it safe.

And, as our community, we look to each and every one of you to help us protect our unique, inclusive, kind and purpose-led network.

It's important therefore that you understand our Community Standards, and the role they play in our shared responsibility to keep Supernova safe. Please take the time to carefully read the policy below. You can also check out this page for a full list of our guidelines.

These Community Guidelines go into many pages of detail, and that's because we want to try and help you with guidance as to what's allowed and what's not in every circumstance we can, and there are many circumstances to address.

However, we want to keep this as simple as we can and in the end Community Standards should boil down to one simple thing you ask yourself before you post anything at all on Supernova.

'Does my post offer value to the day of the community?'

That is; will it make their day better, more positive, or more enriched in any way if they see it? If the answer is 'no', then please DO NOT post it. And if it's 'yes', well then please post away.

One other matter; all who use Supernova are making something Super and New happen. You're all part of this, so we'd like to call our community the Supernova Community.

The Supernovas; or 'Novas' for short and you'll see we refer to 'Novas' in these pages.

And, now, for the detail:

These Community Guidelines set out to help and protect our community. They help clarify what's allowed and not allowed on Supernova. They are not exhaustive and so- since they are for you- we encourage you to add ideas and points you feel we should we should cover with suggestions here.

All types of content on our platform, including photos, posts, comments, links and thumbnails are covered.

Here's a full list of our Community Guidelines:

Charities and our Community

Support for charities is a very important and unique part of what we do on Supernova.

Equally, Charities are also a part of our community and are bound by our Community Standards for the protection of our Community as a whole.

Here are some of the key guidelines for our Community Standards as they relate to Charities:

  • Please note all our charity partners are subject to the regulatory requirements of the Charities Commission; for further detail see the Charities Commission,
  • Our Charity Partners are those featured in the Action Fund and Impact sections of the app,
  • If you are not an official Supernova Charity Partner, you may post about your activities but please do not post links to your sites or canvas for donations,
  • Instead, please contact us at [email protected] to apply for partnership, we'd love to hear from you and see how we can help,
  • For the protection of our Community, only approved partner charities that are approved by Supernova may canvass for funding or support,
  • A note to all members of our community: check before you join these charities or make donations to them; Supernova cannot be responsible for fraudulent charity links or posts,
  • Please note all the following Community Guidelines as set out here apply equally to and in protection of our charity partners and our stakeholders of all kinds as with any and all members of our Community,
  • The guidelines as they refer, for example, to Spam and deceptive practices apply in equal measure to charity related activities as to any other subject and the 3 Strike Rule will also apply to violations of these guidelines,
  • Please do not donate to charities directly through Supernova; instead, please go to the websites of the charities you wish to support and ensure you are comfortable with the Charities' authenticity before donating.
  • If in doubt, donate only to the Charity partners you'll find on Supernova in the Action Fund and Impact pages,
  • Remember, you do not have to donate to charities to help them on Supernova- you support them just by spending time on the app and seeing the ads and messages from our Sponsors ☺

  • Additional policies

After review by our trained human review teams, Supernova takes action on flagged content.

Our reviewers decide if the content violates our policies, and allow content that has educational, documentary, scientific or artistic purpose or value. Our teams will remove or re-classify (e.g. age-restrict) content that violates our policies. Our automated flagging systems also help us identify and remove spam automatically, as well as re-uploads of content that we've already reviewed and determined violates our policies.

Community Guidelines: 3 Strikes Rule

If our reviewers determine that content violates our Community Guidelines, we will remove it and notify the account owner. When an account owner violates our Community Guidelines for the first time, they will receive a warning. We'll issue a Community Guidelines strike to the account owner after one warning, and their account will be temporarily restricted. Three strikes in a 90-day period will result in the account being closed. Accounts that are dedicated to violating our policies or that have a single case of severe platform abuse will be terminated immediately, bypassing our strikes system. If the account owner believes there was an error, all strikes and terminations can be appealed, and our teams will re-evaluate the decision.

Fake Engagement Policy

Our top priority is the safety of our creators, viewers, and partners. And we rely on you to help us keep our community unique, inclusive, kind, and purpose-driven. As a result, it's critical that you understand our Community Guidelines and how they help us all keep Supernova safe. Please take the time to carefully read the policy below.

Anything that artificially inflates the number of views, likes, comments, or other metrics, whether through automated systems or serving content to unwitting viewers, is prohibited by Supernova. Additionally, content that exists solely to reward viewers for their participation (views, likes, comments, etc.) is not permitted.

Supernova may remove any content or pages that do not follow this policy.

Important: You are solely responsible for any actions that have an impact on your page if you hire, appoint, or permit someone to promote it. Any method that violates our policies, whether it's an action taken by you or someone you've hired, could result in content removal, page takedown, or account termination.

We consider engagement to be legitimate when a human user's primary intent is to interact with content without coercion or deception.

Any content that you believe violates this policy should be reported here.

What does our community standards policy mean for you?

If you're a content creator, there are a few things you should know.

Never post content on Supernova if any of the following descriptions apply:

  • Provides or promotes third-party services that inflate views, likes, subscribers, or other metrics artificially.
  • Advertisements for third-party view count or subscriber gaming websites or services, as well as links to them.
  • Offering to Like the content of another creator in exchange for them liking yours ("Like4Like")
  • Note: You can encourage viewers to follow you, like and Supernova your content, share it, or leave a comment by encouraging them to follow you, like and Supernova your content, share it, or leave a comment.
  • Content in which a creator pays a third party for their views in order to promote a service.

This policy includes, but is not limited to, all content, posts, comments, and any other Supernova product or feature. This isn't an exhaustive list.

How is engagement assessed?

These are some examples of content that is not permitted on Supernova (though this is by no means an exhaustive list; remember, if you believe your content may violate our policy or does not add value to the community's day, don't post it).

  • Content in which a creator demonstrates their ability to buy artificial page traffic from a third party.
  • Content that contains a promotional or supportive link to a third-party artificial page traffic provider. For instance, "I got x number of followers in a day on this post, and you can too!"
  • Content that uses deceptive means to force or trick viewers into watching more content (for example: a misleadingly labelled info card)
  • Pages devoted to generating artificial page engagement traffic or promoting businesses that exist solely to generate this type of traffic.

Policy on Imitation, impersonation, and appropriation

The safety of all people who use the Supernova network, whether they are members of our community or our 'Novas,' is our top priority. That's all the people who post, scroll, and leave comments. Everyone who is a sponsor. Our non-profit partners. Our group. Our supporters and stakeholders. Those who oppose us. Anyone and everyone who has a reason to look at our pages and network's content. We want you to have a safe, enjoyable experience that you know you can rely on.

And, as we previously stated, this is your Community.

People are the only reason that social media exists.

It is almost entirely made up of ‘user generated' content, unlike any other form of entertainment.

As a result, the very least we, the ‘platform,' can commit to is doing everything we can to keep it safe.

As a community, we rely on each of you to help us protect our one-of-a-kind, inclusive, kind, and purpose-driven network.

As a result, It's critical that you understand our Community Standards and how they contribute to our shared responsibility of keeping Supernova safe. Please take the time to read the policy below carefully. You can also find a complete list of our guidelines on this page.

Every individual and account holder on Supernova is a unique ‘nova.' As a result, we will not tolerate any ‘appropriation' of one account holder's content by another (or by any automated account impersonation system, such as ‘bots').

Supernova will also assist trademark owners in enforcing their rights. It may not be allowed if a profile, page, or content anywhere causes confusion about the source of goods and services advertised.

Please report any content that you believe violates this policy.

  • If you believe your or another nova's page is being imitated or impersonated, please report the page using the instructions.

What are the implications of these policies for you?

If your content fits any of the descriptions below, don't post it on Supernova.

  • Imitation, impersonation, or appropriation of the person: content that is meant to appear as if it was posted by someone else.
  • Page impersonation or imitation: when a profile copies another profile's background, look, or feel in such a way that it appears to be someone else's profile.
  • Even if the content isn't identical, if it's clear that you were copying, we'll consider it a violation and take action under our 3 Strikes Policy.

These are some examples of prohibited content on Supernova:

  • Accounts with the same name and profile picture as another person's account, but with minor token or "hidden" differences such as a space in the name or a zero in place of the letter "O,"
  • Using another person's real name, username, image, brand, or logo, or attempting to dupe or deceive people into believing you are that person in any way.
  • Direct copying of a page description or profile to another page or profile, word for word
  • Creating a user profile with the name and image of another user or person in order to give the impression that the other person is posting content on the phoney account you created,
  • Pretending to be another user or person by creating a profile with the name and image of another user or person and commenting or otherwise engaging (liking, giving Supernovas) on other users' content or pages.
  • Accounts that claim to be a "fan account" but are actually pretending to be the person they claim to be a fan of, re-posting and appropriating their content (often subtly).
  • Any profiles or posts that pretend to be a news page that already exists.
  • Any content that falsely claims to be from well-known brands or entities, such as news organisations,
  • These are just a few examples; there are many more, and we ask that you use your best judgement: simply do not post content if you believe it may be in violation of this policy.

Think before you link in your content.

The safety of our creators, viewers, and partners is our top priority. And we count on each of you to assist us in preserving our distinct, inclusive, kind, and purpose-driven community. As a result, it's critical that you understand our Community Standards and how they contribute to our shared responsibility of keeping Supernova safe. Please take the time to read the policy below carefully. You can also find a complete list of our guidelines on this page.

  • Endorsing or promoting suicide
  • Disseminating information on how to self-harm or commit suicide
  • Explicit self-harm images posted to shock or disgust viewers

This Community Guidelines policy applies to all Supernova products and features, including posts, images, descriptions, and comments. Please keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list.

Content that is violent or dangerous

Policy on harassment and cyberbullying

Our top priority is the safety of our creators, viewers, and partners, and we rely on each of you to help us safeguard this vibrant community. It's critical that you understand our Community Standards and how they contribute to our shared responsibility of keeping Supernova safe. Please take the time to read the policy below carefully. You can also find a complete list of our rules on this page.

Supernova does not allow content that is threatening to individuals. We also don't allow content that insults someone for a long time or maliciously based on their intrinsic characteristics, such as their protected group status or physical characteristics.

Please report any content that you believe violates this policy. Here are the instructions for reporting violations of our Community Guidelines. You can report the account if you've found multiple violations.

If you receive specific threats and feel threatened, contact your local law enforcement agency immediately.

What does this mean to you?

If your content fits any of the descriptions below, don't post it on Supernova.

  • Content that contains repeated slurs or malicious insults (such as racial slurs) based on their inherent characteristics. These characteristics include their protected group status, physical characteristics, or their status as a survivor of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and other forms of abuse.
  • Content posted with the intention of humiliating, deceiving, or insulting a minor. A minor is someone who has not reached the legal age of majority. This usually refers to anyone under the age of 18, though the definition of a minor varies by country.

Content that violates this policy in other ways

Exceptions to the rule

If the primary purpose of the content is educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic in nature, we may allow it. This does not give you permission to harass someone. Here are a few examples:

  • Debates involving high-profile officials or leaders: Content that includes debates or discussions about current events involving people in positions of power, such as high-ranking government officials or CEOs of major multinational corporations.
  • Scripted performances: Insults delivered through the medium of art, such as scripted satire, stand-up comedy, or music (e.g. a diss track). Note that this does not give you permission to harass someone and claim that "I was joking."
  • Harassment education or awareness: Content that depicts real or simulated harassment for documentary purposes or with willing participants (e.g. actors) in order to combat cyberbullying or raise awareness.

Note: We take a tougher stance on content that maliciously insults someone based on their protected group status, whether or not they are a high-profile figure.

Penalties such as monetary fines and other sanctions

We may remove content or impose other penalties in rare cases when a creator:

  • Encourages abusive audience behaviour on a regular basis.
  • Throughout multiple uploads, repeatedly targets, insults, and abuses an identifiable individual based on their intrinsic characteristics.
  • Puts a person at risk of physical harm because of the social or political context in which they live.

Here are some examples of prohibited content on Supernova:

  • Making a personal attack on someone because they belong to a protected group, such as saying, "Look at this filthy [slur targeting a protected group], I wish they'd just get hit by a truck."
  • Targeting a person and claiming they are a victim of human trafficking in the context of a dangerous conspiracy theory that is linked to direct threats or violent acts.
  • Using a severe insult to dehumanise a person based on their inherent characteristics. “Look at this dog of a woman!” for example. She's not even a human — she's got to be a mutant or an animal!”

Policy on harmful or dangerous content

Our top priority is the safety of our creators, viewers, and partners, and we rely on each of you to help us safeguard this vibrant community. It's critical that you understand our Community Standards and how they contribute to our shared responsibility of keeping Supernova safe. Please take the time to read the policy below carefully. You can also find a complete list of our guidelines on this page.

Content that encourages dangerous or illegal activities that could result in serious bodily harm or death is not permitted on Supernova.

Please report any content that you believe violates this policy. Here are the instructions for reporting violations of our Community Guidelines. You can report the account if you've found multiple violations.

IMPLICATIONS OF THIS POLICY FOR YOU

If your content fits any of the descriptions below, don't post it on Supernova.

  • Extremely dangerous challenges: These are challenges that pose a significant risk of bodily harm.
  • Dangerous or threatening pranks: pranks that cause minors to fear imminent serious physical danger or serious emotional distress.
  • Killing or harming instructions: Showing viewers how to carry out activities that are intended to kill or maim others. Giving instructions on how to make a bomb that will injure or kill others, for example.
  • Abuse of or instructions on how to make hard drugs like cocaine or opioids: Content that depicts or gives instructions on how to abuse or make hard drugs like cocaine or opioids. Hard drugs are substances that can (in most cases) lead to physical dependence.
  • Eating Disorders: Material that glorifies, praises, or encourages people to imitate anorexia or other eating disorders. Eating disorders are defined as abnormal or disturbed eating habits that have a negative impact on a person's health (including eating non-food items).
  • Violent Events: Endorsing or glorifying violent tragedies like school shootings.
  • Instructional thievery or cheating: demonstrating how to steal tangible goods or encouraging dishonesty.
  • Hacking: Demonstrating how to use computers or information technology in order to steal credentials, compromise personal data, or cause serious harm to others, including (but not limited to) hacking into social media accounts.
  • Bypassing payment for digital content or services: Demonstrating how to use apps, websites, or other forms of information technology to gain unauthorised free access to audio, audiovisual content, full video games, software, or streaming services that would otherwise be paid for.
  • Endorsing dangerous cures or remedies: Content that claims that harmful substances or treatments can be beneficial to one's health.

Remember that this isn't an exhaustive list.

Do not share content that shows a minor engaging in risky behaviour or encourages minors to engage in risky behaviour. Never put minors in potentially dangerous situations, such as dangerous stunts, dares, or pranks. More information on child safety can be found here.

Age restricted content

If the content includes any of the above but provides enough context to understand it, we may apply an age restriction rather than remove it. For example, content depicting victims' injuries in a major road accident may be removed, but if presented with news coverage that explains the situation and context, that same content may be age-restricted. When educational content contains violence, this context must be visible in the post. More on the significance of context can be found here.

We may also impose an age restriction on fictional violence if it contains graphic scenes, such as people being dismembered or decapitated, or depicts human corpses with these severe injuries. In general, we allow dramatised violence when the content or metadata indicates that the content is fictional, or when the content itself, such as animated content or video games, makes it clear.

When deciding whether to age-restrict or remove content, we consider the following factors. Please keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list.

  • Whether the post's focus is on violent or gory imagery, such as focusing solely on the most graphically violent scene in a film or video game.
  • Whether the title, description, tags, or other information imply a desire to shock or disgust viewers.
  • Whether or not there has been any blurring, masking, or obscuring of violent imagery or audio
  • The length of time violent images or audio are present in the content.
  • If there is context indicating that the imagery is fictitious or dramatised, such as a statement in the title, or description
  • If the violence is part of a religious or cultural tradition, and the viewer is informed about it.

This policy applies to all Supernova products and features, including posts, images, descriptions, and comments.

Videos depicting dangerous acts may be permitted if they are educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic in nature (EDSA). A news storey about the dangers of choking games, for example, would be appropriate, but posting clips from the same documentary out of context might not be.

This policy applies to all Supernova products and features, including posts, images, descriptions, and comments.

If your content is found to be in violation of this policy, we will remove it and notify you via email. If this is your first violation of our Community Guidelines, you will receive a warning and your page will not be penalised. If it isn't, your page will receive a strike. Your page will be terminated if you receive three strikes. More information about our 3 strikes system can be found here.

What should you do if you get a strike?

If a strike is issued, we'll notify you via email and app notifications. We'll also inform you:

  • What information was removed?
  • Which policies did it break? (for example adult content or violence)
  • What impact does it have on your page?
  • What are your options for the future?

Here's how it affects your page if your content violates our Community Guidelines:

Caution:

We understand that mistakes happen, and that you did not intend to break our rules, which is why the first offence is usually only a warning. It's important to note that you'll only be warned once, and the warning will stay on your page. You'll get a strike the next time your content is found to be in violation of the Community Guidelines. A single case of severe abuse may result in page termination without warning in some cases. You have the right to appeal the warning if you believe we made a mistake.

First Strike,

If we discover that your content violates our policies for the second time, you will be given a strike.

For one week, you won't be able to do the following:

  • Post.
  • Comment.

After the 1-week period, full privileges will be restored automatically, but your strike will remain on your account for 90 days.

Strike Two

You will be unable to post content for two weeks if you receive a second strike within the same 90-day period as your first strike. Full privileges will be restored automatically after the 2-week period if no further issues arise, but each strike will expire 90 days after it was issued.

Strike Three

If you have three strikes in a 90-day period, your account will be permanently deleted from Supernova. Also, keep in mind that each strike lasts for 90 days from the time it's issued, and that deleting the content won't make it go away.

If you get a strike, what should you do?

We'd like you to stay on Supernova, so please:

1. Review our Community Guidelines to ensure that your content complies with our policies.

2. If your page received a strike and you believe we made a mistake, please contact us. This decision can be appealed here.

Supernova also reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit a creator's ability to create content. If your account has been restricted from using Supernova or any of its features, you may not use another account to circumvent the restrictions on Supernova. This is true as long as the restriction on your account is active. Violation of this restriction is a violation of our Terms and Conditions, and your account may be terminated as a result.

Appeal Community Guidelines actions.

Appeal Community Guidelines strikes and removals here. Learn about your options for copyright strikes if your post was removed for copyright reasons.

Content that violates our Community Standards is removed. However, we recognise that we all make mistakes from time to time. If you believe your content did not violate the Community Guidelines and was struck or removed in error, you can appeal using the steps outlined below.

Appeal a Community Guidelines strike.

You may receive a strike if your content is removed due to a violation of the Community Guidelines. When content on Supernova is flagged for review, either by members of the Supernova community or by our smart detection technology, and our review teams determine that it violates our Community Guidelines, strikes are issued. If your page receives a strike, you'll receive an email and app notifications, and an alert the next time you sign in to Supernova.

Before you begin, familiarise yourself with the strike's policy. We also provide examples of content that violates the Community Guidelines. You only have 30 days to appeal after the warning or strike was issued.

Appeal a strike:

The strike will not be resolved by deleting the post. If you remove the offending content from your page, the strike will remain and you will not be able to appeal again.
